Analysing previous student's videos

In class we had to view past student's music videos one that i particularly liked was a video which used the song Naive by the Kooks. There was good use of media language as there was a wide range of shots as well as the use of panning and tracking which gave the video depth. The meaning of the video was also clear as the words correlated with what was happening. The video mainly consisted of shots in London on the Southbank etc which fitted in with the genre as there is a large indie base in London.

The lighting in the video was dark throughout which suits the tone of the song. The narrative was linear and there were no disruptions, the video was building up to the ending where it was revealed to the audience that she was cheating on him. The use of cross fade was very professional and linked the lyrics to the story. Shots were also framed well, sound with images and editing was also used appropriately. The Representation of women was negative as the girl was seen cheating on her boyfriend, the fact that the people in the video were all of a young age suggests that teenage girls in particular are cheaters.

A negative thing about the video was that the misc en scene was not great, at one point there was a McDonalds milkshake cup in the corner of the shot you could argue it is typical of London streets to be filled with litter, however it drew the attention away from what was happening in the video.

In reference to the Andrew Goodwin theory i believe this video is an example of amplification as the video introduced new meaning which did not contradict with the lyrics and added layers of meaning to them. I would give this video a Level 4 which is the highest mark as it was very professional, it also fitted in with the indie genre extremely well, misc en scene was good apart from the cup and the story in the video was very clear and easy to understand unlike other videos we saw.
