The Goodwin Theory.

Andrew Goodwin was a Director of Music for 37 years, he wrote in his book "Dancing in the Distraction Factory" that traditional narrative analysis do not really apply to Pop videos because they approach narrative from a different angle to novels and films. The reasons for the different narrative structures are:

1.) Pop videos are built around songs which do not pose traditional narrative structures.
2.) The Pop video uses the singer as both the narrator and as a character.
3.) The singer often looks directly at the camera which is an extension of performance used to involve the audience with the performance.

Goodwin also stated that Pop videos rely heavily on repetition and that often the video will repeat images in the ways songs will repeat choruses or lines. Also the repetition in songs of parts or rhythms of other songs which is known as intertextuality this means we become familiar with the genre and have certain expectations. Furthermore he goes on to say that the video may be played on TV while the song is played on the radio as well as having a TV tie in which would make the song very popular through repetition.
