Vladamir Propp was a Russian novelist who wrote the book
Morphology of the Folktale in 1928.
Propp broke down and analysed around 100 Russian fairytales and was able to arrive at a conclusion that there were 31 narrative structures.
These are:
He also suggested that there are seven common characters:
The Villian, The Donor, The magical helper, The princess or prize, Her Father, The Dispatcher, The Hero, False Hero.
A music video i feel presents his theory is Brick By Boring Brick - Paramore.
This video includes, ABSENTATION and DEPATURE as the hero (the little girl) leaves her home, the INTERDICTION is presented when the man dressed as the animal, calls the hero over. TRICKERY is also presented as the audience of the video find out that the singer is the real villian. COMPLICITY also links in with the trickery as the victim is taken in by deception. The Hero is also PURSUED but is however not rescued, i believe this is because the video and song do apply some of Goodwin's theory however the video lacks the 'happy ending' where things are resolved in order to go against the stereotypical ideas which link in with fairytales.
